Recently, we had the opportunity to enjoy some Jaques of London toys and games, and they have also given us a special discount code to share.
Who wouldn’t enjoy reviewing toys and games? This time was no exception, and my children loved opening the impeccably packaged toys and games, and peeping at what was inside the boxes!
Beau is currently obsessed with tools and construction and building, so we were gifted the awesome Jaques of London kids wooden construction bench. Fin and Indi are into games at the moment, plus we’ve never had a chess set, so they were gifted a beautiful wooden chess set.
But hold on…
Did you know that Jaques of London invented Snakes and Ladders!
Jaques of London is a family business that has been passed down from father to son for eight generations. Something that I found fascinating about Jaques of London, is, as the oldest games company and sports manufacturer in the world, they invented many well-known games, such as:
- Croquet
- Ping Pong
- Snakes and Ladders
- Ludo
- Tiddledy Winks
- The Staunton Chess Set
- Happy Families
- Snap
- Plus created many more wooden toys!
Jaques of London offers, especially for you!

So, onto the Jaques of London Staunton chess set review.
Starting with the box; beautifully printed, eco-friendly cardboard packaging with a printed ribbon around the box. Now, that’s a nice touch. It sets the scene for what’s in the box, and makes you feel that every detail has been considered.
Once you open the ribbon, and prize open the box, you are greeted with a little pale yellow card, handwritten….. yes! Handwritten! Which toy boxes have you opened recently with a handwritten note? This is a seriously nice touch.
Then you’re into the box, and you’re peeling back the beautiful piece of printed paper that builds the brand and strengthens the experience even more.
But onto the real deal. The chess set itself. A beautifully crafted, folded wooden case with the board on the outside of the case, and the pieces nestled inside. It’s a truly lovely chess set to give your children to play for years to come, or an older relative who loves paying games. I am thinking this is a really good gift to give my dad who likes trips in his caravan. It folds neatly, is compact, and is of a good quality so it will last for years and years of use.
Overall, I’m so pleased with the Jaques of London chess set, and it’s a beautiful addition to our games collection.

I mentioned earlier in this post that Beau loves construction sets and tools. Well this construction bench is the perfect addition to his kit. It’s a lovely set with loads of different ways to construct. You can set it up as a bench, or you can take the entire bench apart and construct something different. Beau is excited to use this over the weekend, he said he is going to make a boat tomorrow!
Now, let’s talk about the tools included. Inside the box is the following kit for your little builders:
- Hammer
- Spanner
- Ruler
- Screwdriver
- Lots of screws
- Lots of other bits and pieces for screwing
If you’re looking for kids construction bench toys, this one is a great choice. It’s really versatile, colourful, well constructed and of great quality. Even blue (our naughty dog) tried to get her teeth into one of the wooden screws, but she didn’t succeed, phew. Too many times has she ruined our things, but not this time!
Another good thing about this set is that it breaks down into a small box for storage, and can all be packed away neatly. No bulky construction kit that is a pain to find a space for, this one is pretty compact.
Traditional family favourites and educational toys
Here is the link to the Jaques of London website. They specialising in toys with multiple benefits, particularly educational. They also have a huge focus on family traditional games, chess being their favourite… and ours, as above!
