Freelancing is a great way to earn money. I know, I’ve been doing it for years! But there are some things about being a freelancer that many people do not enjoy. Freelance invoicing is one of them!
It is a tedious and time-consuming task, but it is not something you can ignore.
The simple truth is that if you don’t send out the required documents then you don’t get paid.
However, as you will see, there are ways to make the whole process easier for yourself.
Here are my top freelancer invoicing tips.
Freelance Invoicing Made Easy
1. Use invoicing templates
This freelance invoice template UK will speed things up considerably. It is nicely laid out, easy to edit and best of all is free.
Just download it and tweak it a little to suit your purposes.
If you use work orders and send out itemised bills you will also find free templates for those on this website.
They are all available in Microsoft Word or Excel and several other formats, so you should easily find one that you can use.
2. Stay up to date
We all get busy and when that happens certain tasks get put on the back burner, left for later.
Invoicing is certainly one of them.
But not prioritising sending out invoices is a bad idea.
At some point, you will have to find the time to send them and it will take you hours to catch up.
You can easily burn through a whole morning, even a whole day doing your invoicing.
It is boring work which seems worse when you have to spend hour after hour doing it.
3. Get used to invoicing immediately for freelance work
Sending your invoice late will also make it more likely that you will not be paid on time.
If you have just sent someone an article you have written and then send them your invoice 5 minutes later, the chances are they will pay it straight away.
They can see that you have done the work.
Whereas, if they receive it several days or a few weeks later they won’t necessarily remember what you did for them.
So, they will need to go off and check that you have done the work.
This won’t take them long, but because the information is not at their fingertips the chances are, they will put it on their to-do pile rather than getting to it right away.
4. Set things up so that you get paid faster
This is one way to help you to get paid faster.
It is good for your bank balance and also reduces the chances that you will have to burn up time chasing up late payers.
Summing Up Freelance Invoicing
Unfortunately, none of the above suggestions will entirely do away with the tedious task of doing your invoices as you do still need to put a bit of effort in on your part.
But these tips will most definitely make life that little bit simpler for you, so it is worth putting some or all of them into action.
