At my house, this goes something like, “Tonight, we’re reading about Unruly Julie – do you think she’s up to more mischief?” Suddenly, homework feels less like a task and more like a treasure hunt for silliness.
Add an Element of Mystery or Excitement
Will Clever Trevor solve the puzzle? By framing reading practice as a fun discovery, you might find you create enough intrigue to get your children to open the book.
2. Channel Your Inner Performer
Nothing snaps kids out of the “I’m too tired” routine like a bit of outrageousness from Mum or Dad. Grab a book and go all-in with funny voices and exaggerated expressions.
Make it Interactive
Also, you could try to make your reading session interactive! Divide the rhyming verses so your child gets to join in on the silliness. You read one line, they read the next. Or, swap roles halfway and see who can be sillier. Not only does this keep them engaged, but it also builds confidence.
