Designing a space for your kids is an incredibly creative process. You can play around with a number of different ideas, finding what’s best for your kid’s specific developmental needs.
Part of that process consists of choosing the best curtains. They need to be the perfect balance between functional and playful – let’s explore how you can go about achieving that balance.
Playful colours
When we grow up, we often revert to ‘sensible’ (boring) colours. When designing a kid’s room, you can get as playful as you like; involve your child in the process, and ask them what their favourite colours and patterns are.
You can integrate those into the curtains as best as possible, by looking at online stores like Woodyatt Curtains. While you want to get something that’s fun, it’s worth keeping in mind that you also want to create an environment in which your child can rest and sleep – don’t get something too stimulating, or bedtime could become tricky.
Optimised sleep environment
It’s been scientifically proven that we all need a dark environment in order to get the best night’s sleep possible. Children are often even more sensitive to these kinds of things than adults, making it incredibly important that whatever window coverings you get can help to create a totally dark space.
Consider blackout blinds, or if you are going to get curtains, make sure that they’re lined with a light-blocking fabric. Kids need all the rest they can get, and it’s important to provide them with the perfect environment for that.
Washable
Children make a mess – there are no two ways around it. It’s not even something we should necessarily want to try to avoid; as a young person, you should be able to explore the world on your own terms, being creative and forming your own environment.
That does have some practical implications, and in terms of the curtains that you choose, it means that you should probably try to go with an option that can be washed easily. Strong kinds of cotton and polyesters that have machine-washable dyes can be a great option. That way, when they get a bit dirty, you don’t need to stress, you can just take them off and chuck them in the washing machine.
Layering
You can also use layering very effectively when it comes to choosing curtains for your kid’s room. This might typically consist of having sheer curtains that can be used during the day to create a soft, calming environment, and then light-blocking curtains that can be pulled during the night or for nap time to help your child sleep better.
Child-friendly operation
It’s important that there aren’t any loose hanging strings or ropes that your kid could possibly get tangled up in. Choose child-friendly fixings – if you’re not sure what those might be, it’s worth going to your local hardware store and having a quick chat with one of the people who work there.
Getting that balance between functional and playful can be a tricky process, but if you follow those basic tips laid out above, we’re sure you’ll manage it without too much fuss. Just remember to get something that’s safe for long term use in an environment with children – at the end of the day, their safety comes above everything.
