Italy is a great travel destination because although it is a small country, it consists of many beautiful cities with famous landmarks. This is why most tourists get to visit many different places while they are there. There are also some who fall in love with the place.
One of the spots that it is worth staying at or at least making a stop at is Pisa. Pisa is both a province in Tuscany and a city in the same area. The city might be small but it is full of important historical sights that make its natural beauty even more impressive. If you have a car, you can get around the city in no time. But where should you go and what to do in Pisa?
Take photos in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa
The most iconic attraction in Pisa is the Leaning Tower, or the Tower of Pisa. It is a bell tower. The tower is 55.86 metres high and it was built in the 12th century. Why is it so famous? Because it leans. Its tilt appeared while the construction was in progress. The subsoil of the location was weak and it caused the tower to sink after the completion of a couple of floors. Besides taking fun pictures outside, you can buy tickets and see the interior. There are seven floors with 296 or 294 steps.
Learn about Italian art at the National Museum of San Matteo
Along the riverside, you will find the National Museum of San Matteo. If you love visiting a classical or contemporary art gallery, this is the place for you. The museum displays paintings and sculptures that were created from the 12th to 16th centuries. Works of artists like Berlinghiero, Simone Martini, Nicola Pisano and Donatello are displayed. What is even more impressive is the fact that this museum is located in the monastery of St. Matteo, which was built in the 11th century. This explains the numerous ancient ecclesiastical items, such as wooden crosses and icons, which are also showcased.
Visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
When you visit any city in Italy, you have to stop and admire the impressive Catholic churches. Of course, you will find many churches in Pisa as well. One that you shouldn’t skip is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. It took 29 years to be completed, from 1063 to 1092, as it is a huge edifice. Similarly to the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral leans slightly due to the soil.
Cruise along the Arno River
Arno is an important river in Italy as it passes through major cities in Tuscany, Florence, Empoli and Pisa. It would be a shame not to take advantage of your time there and book a boat tour on the river. You will get to not only see all the important landmarks of the city from a different perspective but also sit back and enjoy the spectacular view.
